When ordering custom boxes, the same question almost always comes up: is single-wall (3-ply) board enough, or do you need double-wall (5-ply)? The difference is not just the price. The wrong choice means either damaged goods or unnecessarily expensive and heavy packaging.
How they differ
Single-wall board has one flute between two flat liners. It is lighter, cheaper and perfectly adequate for most ordinary shipments.
Double-wall board has two flutes and three flat liners. It is thicker, much stronger in compression and puncture resistance, and copes better with stacking and longer transport.
When single-wall is enough
- light and medium-weight products
- courier shipments where boxes are not stacked high
- inner packaging and layer pads to separate layers
- online shop parcels and short-term storage
When to choose double-wall
- heavy products, parts and components
- large-format boxes and pallet boxes
- boxes stacked high on a pallet
- longer transport, more handling or export
How to decide quickly
Three things matter most: the weight of the contents, the size of the box and how it will be transported and stored. The larger the box and the higher it is stacked, the more double-wall board pays off – even for lighter contents, because a large panel bends more easily.
